What is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is defined as inflammation of sinus lining (mucosa) is commonly caused by anatomical abnormalities, bacterial infection, viral infection, fungal infection, or the combination of these.
Four groups of Sinuses are located in bones of face and skull. One pair of are located below eyes called as maxillary sinuses. One pair of sinuses which are situated above the eyes called as frontal sinuses. There are multiple numbers of sinuses located in between in between eyes below skull base are called ethmoidal sinuses. At Centre of skull bases very near to optic nerves are sphenoid sinuses.
Symptoms of Sinus:
- Nose block, stuffy nose
- Facial pain/pressure
- Sleep disturbance
- Pain areas: in the back of the eyes, face, forehead, nose, or sinuses
- Decreased sense of smell
- Nasal discharge, yellowish discolored.
When all or many of the above-mentioned symptoms persist for more than 12 weeks, it is called as chronic sinusitis.
How to Treat Sinusitis
There are two treatment options available for sinusitis – Medical & Surgical treatment. Both are aimed at an opening of blocked sinuses, by removing enlarged tissues draining of fluid or pus and improving ventilation of sinuses.
Medical treatment consists of antibiotics, intranasal steroid sprays, Saline nasal douching.
When medical treatment fails, then Sinus Surgery (FESS) is considered.
What is FESS?
FESS stands for Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. Endoscopic sinus surgery is performed by passing 4mm endoscope with the different angle of views 0°, 30°, 70° into nasal cavity and magnification achieved by attaching high definition camera to Endoscope.
